Another Hornblower Story

Post by Borrelpeff on Thu 11 Sep 2008, 08:57

I only found this quite recently in "The Mammoth Book of Men of War", Hornblower's Charitable Offering is set in HMS Sutherland, and is one of many shorts that Forester wrote to pad out the series. The book, which contains stories from many well known writers, and has an intro from Kent, is published by Robinsons, ISBN 1-84119-060-8

Re: Another Hornblower Story

I've seen references to this before but never followed it up. I believe this 'short' was also called The Bad Samaritan and was originally intended as a chapter for 'Ship of the Line'.

It also appeared with two other shorts The Hand of Destiny (set in 1796 when he was a Midshipman) and Hornblower and His Majesty (set in 1812 between 'Commodore Hornblower' and 'Lord Hornblower')
in Hornblower - One More Time a rare book which is hard to find.

I think Hornblower and His Majesty can also be found in The Mammoth Book of Hearts of Oak ISBN 1841192791

Another The Point And The Edge set in 1819 was outlined in the Hornblower Companion by C.S. Forester, but never written
