novel takes Matthew to Portsmouth in the year 1545. The French fleet is waiting

off the Isle of Wight and Henry VIII is in the city to see his navy fight off the

invasion attempt. A very well thought-out plot has Shardlake aboard the Mary

Rose during her last sortie.

There is a wealth of detail about Henry's navy. The author visted Portsmouth and

its Mary Rose museum during his research. It was interesting ...

So I have finally had a chance to read Band Of Brothers. I have to say that it confused me in it's style. Did anyone else feel like the book did not read in the same way as the other two Midshipman novels. I know it has been a long time between the writing of the first two and this one but it should have been a more coherrent feel. If you revisit a previously existing environment and character they should mesh. It's just a feeling and I wish I could be more specific. Did anyone else get ...

This book by Patrick O'Brian has been released with a cover that matches the Aubrey ones with a sailing ship on the front. Earlier prints had land based pictures on them. I think the early chapters may be sea based and involve surviving a typhoon but from what I've read I think it is mainly a land based treasure hunt. I think the cover may be a ploy to entice Aubrey fans to buy this one.

Just came accross this book The Four Days' Battle of 1666: The Greatest Sea Fight of the Age of Sail by Frank L. Fox from a year ago. On 1 June 1666 a large but outnumbered English fleet engaged the Dutch off the mouth of the Thames in a colossal battle that was to involve nearly 200 ships and last four days. False intelligence had led the English to divide their fleet to meet a phantom threat from France and although the errant squadron rejoined on the final day of the battle, it was not enough ...

Bought a second-hand hardback edition of this recently (the title seems to be hard to get new, certainly in the UK). Divided into two halves, the first gives details and historical background to each book, complete with diagrams and maps. The second is an informal narrative by CSF about how each of the books came to be written. It is a fascinating insight into the life of a very formal writer. He was taken seriously ill, and suffered one heart attack during the series, (which he had thought to ...

In effect it is a potted history, but excellent as an introduction to the period or for background ...
