This book by Patrick O'Brian has been released with a cover that matches the Aubrey ones with a sailing ship on the front. Earlier prints had land based pictures on them. I think the early chapters may be sea based and involve surviving a typhoon but from what I've read I think it is mainly a land based treasure hunt. I think the cover may be a ploy to entice Aubrey fans to buy this one.

I'm not going to include this one for the time being. Anyone read it or got a view?

Hi there.

Forgive me wading in to a forum where I was unknown until today, but I like the format you have here and would like to add to the discussion.

I first came across Patrick O'Brian's work just after he died, although I had read plenty of CS Forrester before that, and for what it is worth I think O'Brian is an absolute master of historical fiction. His convincing attention to historical detail, his research scholarship into the period and his insightful characterisation all add ...

I have this year paid two visits to Guernsey & on both occasions i have gone to the churchyard of Ste Marie du Castel to see the grave of Admiral Lord de Saumarez. On my second visit in Mar 2001,my eye was drawn to a grave nearby which contains the remains of servants of the Saumarez family. On this grave among other names ,it was with a shiver of recognition that i saw the following

Well after having watched the BBC series of Hornblower I preceded to read through most of C.S. Foresters books (they are surprisingly hard to get ahold of here in Australia) and enjoyed them very much.

My father needed a couple of extra books to order through the "Folio Society" to keep his membership up, and some of the Patrick O'Brian books were in the catalogue so I got those.

Literally the last writings of POB, and published in an unfinished state. I think I may have mentioned before that I feel this to be a shame. In some editions, the unpolished text is shown as typescript, with the set form opposite; this is interesting to some extent, although there is the uncomfortably feeling that you are reading someone else's diary. The story develops nicely, but inevitably ends in mid air. I would be very surprised if a perfectionist, such as O'Brian would have approved ...
