The Terror Before Trafalgar - Tom Pocock

Post by 80 Winters on Wed 21 Mar 2012, 05:01

"Drawing on diaries, letters, and newspapers, Tom Pocock offers a wonderful picture of the years 1801-1805, and of the people wittingly or unwittingly caught up in these unique events: Nelson himself as he blockaded the French at sea for two unbroken years; his love Emma Hamilton waiting at home; Jane Austen and her naval brothers; the diarist Fanny Burney; the admirals, generals, and politicians; and those lesser-known men - Congreve, Moreau, and Pichegru -- who waged the secret war, in England and in France."

"Tom Pocock has been described as the foremost authority on Nelson. He is the author of eight books about the admiral and his time."

If you're interested in an AOS reference section for your library, a copy of this wouldn't go amiss. I have a copy in mine.

Re: The Terror Before Trafalgar - Tom Pocock

This is one that I found today while searching for something to read while awaiting my next delivery of HNF novels. I see that it's been sitting here since 2009, so its time has come.

However, I haven't found it on any list, nor on the website. The title is Trafalgar, An Eyewitness History. It's "edited and introduced" by Tom Pocock and printed by the Folio Society in 2005

The "Editorial Note" in part states:
"This book tells the story of the Battle of Trafalgar and the two-year naval campaign that preceded it primarily through the words of those who took part. Many of the accounts are taken from letters home, others from despatches, reports, logs, journals and even recorded conversations."

There's no ISBN shown for this book, so we'll see how much of the material in The Terror Before Trafalgar it replicates. Is anyone familiar with this book?
