Broos Campbell: Matty Graves

Post by Astrodene on Wed 15 Oct 2008, 18:00

Showing my ignorance I have to admit that I only recently heard of the quasi-war between the US and France. There was a chapter or two that referred to it in the 'Thomas Kydd' Novel 'Quarterdeck'.

This series (3 books so far) is set during this war and about the life of a US Navy officer. Could be an interesting read. Has anyone read them?

I now have copies of this series and will be reading them soon. I'll post an update afterwards.

I was going to start this series, but something more compelling came up. I intend to return to it sooner or later (perhaps sooner, based on your report Very Happy )

Yes, I'm looking out for this one; I get the impression they are a little tongue in cheek (which sounds quite refreshing).

As this author has a dedicated forum the rest of this thread has been split into ones for the individual books

Re: Broos Campbell: Matty Graves

Since I purchased these 3 books together from McBooks Press when the 3rd book Peter Wicked was published in 2008, expecting this to be the beginning of a series, my comments are with respect to the entire series (which unfortunately, it's turned out to be).

Broos Campbell was a well practiced short story writer when he wrote these his first (and his last to date) HNF introducing the character of Matty Graves. He's picked a niche, the Quasi-war between the recently minted United States and France (how soon we forget our allies).

I enjoyed the action, and it was pretty much continuous. I liked the characters and Campbell's cast of characters "up forward" (like the inclusion of maps it helps me focus).

I read them one after the other and advise it, if you can get them all before starting the 1st. They're easy reading an a "good yarn". I recommend them for a 1st time or early reader of HNF. They're in my library.
