The Influence of Sea Power upon History (1660-1783) by Mahan
This is just one of several books written by Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan during his career as the leading strategist within the U.S.Navy. He defines "seapower" and those elements that contribute to its realization for any nation.
For the sake of brevity, I will direct you to Wikipedia for a full description of Mahan and his several significant works dealing with seapower as it impacted England, France and the United States among others during the Age of Sail.
If you enjoy HNF, but wish to know more about the background of seapower, how it was obtained and its relevance to the outcome of history during the Age of Sail and beyond, this book as well as several of Mahan's others will provide that insight.
Mahan's books on the strategy of seapower are required reading for students of military history as well as professional naval officers of several nations. They are well researched, knowledgably written and remain relevant even today.
It was not an "easy read" as a young student of military history 50+ years ago, but through "life experience" I came to better understand the terms, impacts and results of having (or not having) seapower upon the world's nations both in war and peace. Its in my library.

One of the most influential books in all of human history. I have a nice coffee table version of the book with many maps and pictures.
