Keepers of the Sea by Richard Woodman

Post by 80 Winters on Fri 13 Apr 2012, 22:16

Interestingly, this is one of Woodman's earliest ventures into the field of nautical writing, but as a career seaman employed by Trinity House and therefore having access to their historical records, what better to write about. In fact, his original draft of Keepers of the Sea won the 1978 Marine Society award given annually "to the British seafarer judged to have made the best use of his leisure time" (British humor at its best -What !).

Publisher's comments can be found on HNF website.

A little small to be called a "coffee table" book, and since it doesn't expand on any HNF series I wouldn't call it a "companion" book either. But like so many other books that deal with the AOS (and beyond in this case), you will find the Trinity House and their Brethren an integral part of the story of England's seapower. I found it to be an interesting account of the history of Trinity House and haven't found anything else available that matches it. Another good job by Richard Woodman.
Oh, and there are lots of interesting drawings, paintings and photographs to keep your interest up.

It's in my library.
