Nile Medal up for Auction

Post by Alaric Bond on Wed 12 Nov 2008, 09:00

Alexander Davidson commissioned a series of medals commemorating Nelson's victories. A bronze "Nile" medal has just appeared on ebay, at a starting price of £290 This would have been presented to an ordinary rating who was present at the battle. The medal appears crisp and unpolished. Further details at

Had a look and it sounds good (if you have the cash to spare!).

It's only a personal view but I have an underlying mistrust of things like that on ebay. If it's rare due to it's condition you'd expect it to come up in a specialist arms and militaria auction. If I bought something like that from ebay I'd forever be expecting the police to knock on my door to recover stolen property! There just seems to be no way of ensuring the bonafides of sellers on that system with only a little over a 100 ratings that could easily have been done by setting up a few hotmail email accounts.

Have you had personal experience of purchasing this sort of thing through ebay?

Keep posting them, it's nice to see whats on offer and one of these days I might be tempted scratch
