Elizabethan Guns
Watched an interesting programme on the BBC the other night. An Elizabethan ship has been found from the time of the Armada off the coast of Alderney. The programme investigates the ships guns. The Mary Rose at the time of her father had all different sizes of guns hence making finding the right amunition for reloading, storing etc. a bit difficult and it was believed that Elizabethan ships had the same problem. The programme investigates the fact that the ship seems to have a matching set of guns much earlier than historians thought they first appeared. A replica is also tested. This would probably mark the transition from effectively having a land battle at sea using troops to the ships standing off and blasting away with their cannon. If you missed it the programme can be viewed online for a limited period at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00hy68t
