Cutty Sark

Post by Astrodene on Sun 31 May 2009, 09:46

I's just over 2 years since the fire that devastated the ship, however it seems initial fears of the ships destruction were exagerated. Most of the original equipment had already been removed and much of the fire was temporary roofing, scaffolding boards and materials. The Lottery fund has provided the additional funding to get the restoration back on track (well 1 year late) and the ship should now open to the public again next spring.

There is an interesting photographic diary (month by month) on the official website, started the September after the fire, and some of the early pictures clearly show the design of the iron frame construction of the ship. The diary can be found here

Ahhh

I am looking at perhaps being over in England in the summer of 2013 (if the world does not end in 2012) and visiting Portsmouth.

Cutty Sark is in Greenwich, London I'm afraid not Portsmouth.

In Portsmouth Victory is undergoing major restoration and recently had the masts removed though the plan is to keep her open to the public while the work is done. The new May Rose museum should be open by then though
