The Sea Rover's Practice by Benerson Little
Subtitled "Pirate Tactics and Techniques, 1630 - 1730". The author, a former USN SEAL, details the how-to actually involved in capturing sea-going vessels of the era. Taken from actual historical accounts, it reviews sailing tactics, seamanship skills, the role of small arms and big guns, and describes the use of ruse and deception, among other things. After reading this, one has a better appreciation of the challenges of single ship-on-ship battle, especially the importance of small arms.

One I haven't come across, but certainly on the list; thanks Conaghan!

I recommend it also. It's an important antidote to the romanticization of the pirate. It's very readable as it attempts to reconstruct in detail exactly what the sea rovers did and how they did it.

This author has been quite prolific in the last few years and now seems to be regarded as something of an expert on Pirates. You can see all his books on the website. Benerson Little
