Just finished it last night. I like the fact that Lewrie is maturing as a commander and as a person. Although he is still very cynical about just about everything the Admiralty orders him to do.

The majority of this book takes place in England and in the Channel. I don't want to give away the plot line,
Spoiler:
but after Caroline's death
in King Ship and Sword, it's a nice turn to see some good things happen to Lewrie. Although, he still manages to get himself into trouble, then do something heroic to save his neck.

Spoiler inserted for those who have not read the previous book

Thanks Scout, I still hav'nt gotten the new book, as real life and the job took over for a while.

So how does it compare to others in the series, about the same, better or something else?

Cheers, thanks again!!

Just finished it, not a half an hour ago. A pretty solid Lamdin/Lewrie read and I've read 'em all. A bit better than 'King, Ship & Sword' perhaps, and certainly very consistent with the rest of the series as it's not just sword strokes and powder smoke on every page. Just like Lucky Jack I do enjoy getting to know a bit of our captian's private life. I also enjoy Lambdin's sense of humor. It's not quite as droll as O'Brian's but I did laugh out loud once and I suspect, as a Yankee, that fellow-Yank Lamdin's humor is a bit more coarse than the British style and may offend, slightly, those of a conservative bent.
Another thing I appreciate is the fact we get a lot of characters in the book and that some within the series are actually quite well fleshed-out; much like O'Brian did. Can't wait to see what happens with his new love interest or his possibley soon to be former female arch enemy.
I certainly await the next in the series.

Just finished this last night. I enjoyed reading it, but was left with a feeling of vague disappointment. I'm not certain exactly why, but I'll digest it for a bit and perhaps clarify my feelings. It could be that this one felt rather like Lambdin was just treading water. I like the new interest in Lewrie's life. I enjoyed his reactions to praise and reward. Cynical dog, what? But it still just didn't quite sing for me.
