Surgeon Journals go online

Post by Astrodene on Mon 04 Oct 2010, 09:29

For those interested in the life of a naval surgeon in the 19th century, the UK's National Archives have opened up and made accessible over 1,000 Royal Navy Medical Officers' Journals.
The journals include a variety of colourful tales of 18th and 19th century ship life from drunken rum-related incidents, venereal disease, scurvy, shark bites, tarantulas to lightning strikes, gun fights, mutiny, arrests and court martial, not to mention ship wrecks and even murder.

If you'd like "another take" on this subject, Joan Druett has compiled and interesting and sometimes even humorous account based on the diaries of several ships surgeons in the 1830's (not much had changed).
