Frigates, Sloops and Brigs by James Henderson

Post by ronbo477 on Fri 03 Dec 2010, 04:47

This is 2 books combined. I recommend reading Sloops and Brigs first then Frigates. This isn't hard to do because the two books are divided by tall ship artwork. The reason to read Sloops and Brigs first is many of the successful lieutenants and commanders recieve a lot of attention as Frigate captains stories. Kind of keeps it in order. The book makes many interesting points on when the different vessels changed armament and for what reasons.

For more information I listed it on the web site

I also put it on my wish list at the time but haven't purchased it yet. May have to move it up in the light of a reccommendation.

Thanks for the reminder; I bought this book some while back, and still have not had time to read it. Still, it looks a goody, and has moved from the bookshelf to my desk.

So many books, so little time!

Borrelpeff

At last a book I can recommend to you. I thought it was excellent reading, more like a book of short stories than a series of historical accounts.

I know what you mean about lack of time though, I’ve got such a backlog I’ve taken to cheating and downloading audio books!

Audio books can be good, I used to spend at least four hours a day driving and would hire them from my local library. Sadly I soon went through all their Historical Nautical Fiction, then Nautical Fiction, Historical Fiction, and Fiction in general: I was getting desperate towards the end, and actually considering Women's Romance when I was finally able to chuck the job!

The full length books are by far the best, I have yet to find a good condensed version, and the reader is very important (I was almost put to sleep by the deep tones of an American reading a John Grisham).

I'm reading F,S& Brigs now and have to agree with the recommendations; excellent: thanks, guys!.

Now, I feel cheated. My book The Frigates by James Henderson, CBE only covers frigates (no sloops and no brigs). It's still a good read and I agree with "Jonny" that it reads "more like a book of short stories than a series of historical accounts". A pretty short book that encompasses the ships you know, the captains you know and the battles you remember........if you've been reading your HNF for awhile.

It includes a few great battle scene paintings as well. It's in my library.
