Previously owned by Hardy?

Post by Alaric Bond on Sun 06 Feb 2011, 09:44

I noticed this on UK ebay, although the seller is in the USA:
1817 Military Book,War Of 1812,Infantry Rules Regs.
INSCRIBED "RETURNED BY CAPT.HARDY" UNDER ADMIRAL NELSON

Obviously there will be some doubt about the provenance, but it may be of interest.

The images of it certainly make it look genuine but you have to wonder about the sellers interpretation. They are American rules & regs which Hardy might have captured I suppose but why would he 'return' them. It's just as likely, if not more so, that an American army captain who happened to have the same surname was issued them and returned them after the war.
