The Death of Admiral Byng

Post by Alaric Bond on Mon 14 Mar 2011, 07:39

Today, 14th March 2011, marks the anniversary of Admiral Byng's execution on board HMS Monarch. At noon, the Tenor Bell of All Saints' Church, Southill, Bedfordshire, England, will toll 52 times. One toll for every year of his life. Byng was given the death penalty for cowardice (even though the court was not valid under the articles of war). It is wildly held that he was a political scapegoat; two years ago a petition was handed to the British House of Commons calling for his honour to be restored.

Having read a good amount of HNF in the AOS with little mention of this episode, I was "gob struck" when I read Dudley Pope's account of the incident and issues surrounding it.
