Re: Perverse Curiosity - POTC 4
I tried to watch Against All Flags recently, but I couldn't do it. It was that bad. I'm in mourning. I grew up on Errol Flynn. Captain Blood and the Seahawk had an unwholesome impact on my juvenile mind. Look at what became of me! I ran away to sea to become a tall ship sailor and write nautical novels. Tsk tsk.
There is no other Robin Hood. Kevin Costner, take your silly hat and go home.

You just made me realize a similarity between Russell Crowe and Errol Flynn. They have both played Robin Hood in addition to their roles in age of sail movies. But you can give me Flynn's version over the broody fantastihistorical* Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe Robin Hood. Not even Crowe's dynamism could save the movie from its muddled self. And although he got derided for his accent, to my American ears it sounded reasonably close to a Yorkshire accent, just a bit too mumbly.
*"Fantastihistorical" is the term that I just made up for a Hollywoodized fantasy version of history that is alleged to in fact be super accurate and based on cutting-edge historicalacious (meaning bearing extra juicy history) research. You know, like that King Arthur movie where it is taken as writ that Arthur was a real figure and a Roman warrior.

Oh, and I guess if you count Waterworld then Costner has also played both Robin Hood and a nautical hero. . . of sorts.

Yorkshire accent? Now you have me wondering how Sean Bean would have played Robin Hood.
Re: Perverse Curiosity - POTC 4
Ooh, I think Bean would be a great one!

The soundtrack from POTC1 was great, I thought. I enjoyed the movie, lovely piece of hokum, but, as with many, the follow-ups have got progressively worse.
Can't be bothered with the last one at all.

That man is great on so many levels.

I'm watching the Sharpe movies. He isn't dead yet. I have noticed, however, that it is unsafe to be standing close to him in battle. It is equally unhealthy to sleep with him because you will either die or run off with a gambler.

However being a large Irishman seems to counteract that.

I think it's the mini gun Mr. Harper is carrying. Either that, or because he's careful to stay *behind* Mr. Sharpe. Such a clever Irishman with a gift of the blarney he is, "I've got your back, sir."
Re: Perverse Curiosity - POTC 4
On the subject of POTC, here's a bit of "trivia" for you:
The British ship "HMS Interceptor" was played by our official Washington state Tall Ship, the Lady Washington which was hauled out here in Port Townsend to be modified and repainted for her role in the 1st movie.
Due to "plot" requirement she was destroyed in the 1st movie, and therefore was not used in any of the following movies.
