Master and Commander (book 1 of the Aubrey series)

I read all of Hornblower and figured to give this one a shot next, little did I know.....

WOW, the writing style was just so different,but told such a story after reading that very fatefull meeting in the Governors house at port Mahon!!

To me this was just like being back and living in England at that specific time and place. I really did feel like I was there while reading this book. It took some getting used to but Aubrey and Martin were just a perfect match, as most know and love about this series!!

Collecting and reading the whole series was almost the best book experience that I have ever had, with a few exceptions. But this series really got me into Age of Fighting Sail.

No worries, though Master & Commander isn't actually set in England! I love it of course, though it has quite a distinct flavour from the remainder of the series, eg main characters are not yet fully formed.

More of an "English flavor" is what I meant joolz, sorry I was'nt that clear, I'm no writer as you can tell, to say the least!!

It was nice to see that they were not that developed as each following book showed a diferent aspect of each at times. If they were all fleshed out from book one and on, not sure I would have loved it as much.

I loved Master and Commander. The Aubrey/Maturin series is what started me in HNF and is still the standard by which I judge all others.

Just finished rereading this, 4th time I think now and I am still in love, so to speak about this series.

I seem to pick up more and more depth about Aubrey and Martin as characters, and human beings living in those times.

Nothing much to add. Each rereading reveals nuances missed in previous reads. Hearing it read by Patrick Tull reveals even more. I'm in the midst of the Mauritius Campaign now and the drive to work now seems to pass all too quickly, it seems.

Thanks reb I find if I do a reread to soon after the last one... You don't get the "effect" of a great read like the first time.

No real questions or anything either just another great first book in the series, great characters and good stories!!

I find this to be true as well. I am on my second reading of the series, but each book seems very fresh to me.
