Hornblower on radio
I'm finding that "H.H." has an even richer history than I had imagined. In 1952-53, well before C.S. Forester had completed the series, British actor Michael Redgrave 'took to the airwaves' with a weekly series of radio episodes of the exploits of this popular HNF figure. How 'closely' they mirror the actual adventures as conceived by Forester, I'll let you be the judge:

I am in the middle of listening to this series. The BBC also produced a radio drama called "The Hornblower Story". You can find this online also to listen to. Between the two series they cover most of the books except for Atropos, Crisis, and Admiral.

Re: Hornblower on radio
I realize the original post in this thread was from 2017 but in terms of seeking out forms of entertainment from the past, the pandemic seems to be the mother of investigation.
Here in the States I know of people listening to old radio broadcasts from the 40's of our baseball World Series. Rehashing old sporting events is usually quite dull unless you have a big stake in the game and your team won. However, these old broadcasts likely to be something you haven't heard before, they feature famous players of old, and the vintage radio is entertaining in its own right. Even the commercials are fun if you can get them.
